MORMONISM

MORMONISM

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel* unto you than that which we have preached unto you, LET HIM BE ACCURSED” (Gal 1:8).

*The word “gospel” means “good news” or “glad tidings.” In the case of Galatians 1:8 it is the “good news” of personal salvation.

Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, claimed to have had several visions from God while he was yet in his teens. During one of these appearances an angel by the name of Moroni was supposed to have advised Joseph of the location of a set of golden plates. These plates were to contain “an account of the former inhabitants of this continent”…and…”the fullness of the everlasting gospel was contained in it…” (Joseph Smith 2:34).

TESTS FOR TRUTH

Since we are instructed in the word of God to “prove all things and hold fast to that which is good” (1Thess 5:21), at least three questions should immediately come to mind.

1. How does the gospel ministered by the apostle Paul in the Bible compare with the “fullness of the everlasting gospel” contained in Mormonism?

2. Does Joseph Smith pass God’s test for a true prophet?

3. Does the “account of the former inhabitants of this continent” in the Book of Mormon find verification in history and archaeology as the Bible does with its record?

THE FIRST TEST…THE GOSPEL

The gospel Paul preached and wrote to the Galatians, about which he pronounced a curse on anyone who would teach otherwise, was clearly revealed:

“Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (Galatians 1:3-5)

“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” (Galatians 2:16)

“I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” (Galatians 2:21-3:3)

See also Galatians 3:6, 8-9, 11, 26-27 and 5:5

Paul declared the same gospel to Titus when he wrote:

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5)

He likewise expressed the same truths to the Ephesians when he wrote:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

And to the Romans:

“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” (Romans 4:5)

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” (Romans 10:4)

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation…For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-10, 13)

The apostle Paul and John were in agreement:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)

And the very words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself teach the same thing:

“Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” (John 6:29)

Thus we see that the Biblical plan of salvation is the substitutionary life, death, burial, and resurrection of The Lord Jesus Christ in the sinner’s place:

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (1Corinthians 15:1-4)

All who truly put their trust in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ on their behalf are thereby “born again.”

“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your

fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God…Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” (1Peter 1:18-21, 23)

The one verse summation of the above is:

“For he (the Father) hath made him (the Lord Jesus Christ) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2Corinthians 5:21)

Jesus Christ took upon Himself the guilt and penalty of our sins. Upon our receiving Him as our Saviour by faith, we have His righteousness put to our credit (see Romans the 4th chapter)!

THE MORMON “GOSPEL”

What is the Mormon plan or “gospel” of salvation and how does it match with that which the apostle Paul was moved of Almighty God to minister?

The Mormon “gospel” has four initial steps:1

1. Faith in the christ of Mormonism (this christ will be defined later)

2. Repentance

3. Water baptism for the remission of sins

4. Laying on of hands for the receipt of the Holy Spirit

These four steps must then be followed by a life of obedience. Note these verses from the Book of Mormon:

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart…with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism…then ye shall receive the Holy Ghost,…then cometh the baptism of fire…he that endureth to the end, shall be saved…unless a man shall endure to the end, in following the example of the Son…he cannot be saved…the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost…after ye have gotten into this straight and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, NAY…ye must press forward with steadfastness…and endure to the end…Ye shall have eternal life…this is the way and there is none other way…” (2Nephi 31:13-21)

However, while we are clearly instructed by Mormonism that there is “none other way” in the above, an account in the Book of Mormon is given of a man alone in the forest whose sins were “forgiven” and who had his “guilt swept away” as the result of his crying unto his Maker in mighty prayer and supplication all day and into the night (Enos 1:1-8). He was forgiven without water baptism or laying on of hands!

Mormon teaching utterly renounces salvation simply by faith in the finished work of Christ as sufficient for the salvation of mankind:

“…a most pernicious (Webster’s Dictionary…highly injurious or destructive) doctrine – that of justification by belief alone. The Savior taught that works were essential to the validity of profession and the efficacy (Webster’s Dictionary…power to produce effects) of faith.”2

“Christians speak often of the blood of Christ. Much that is believed and taught on this subject, however, is such utter nonsense and so palpably false that to believe it is to lose one’s salvation. For instance, many believe or pretend to believe that if we confess Christ with our lips and avow that we accept him as our personal Savior, we are thereby saved. They say that His blood without any other act than mere belief, makes us clean.”3 (Please see again Romans 10:9-13)

The above false teaching of Mormonism is inexcusable in the light of:

“And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they (Paul and Silas) said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” (Acts 16:30-31)

“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood” (Revelation 1:5)

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:” (Colossians 1:14)

The Mormons change the definition of Biblical words and thus cause confusion and misunderstanding. When the Bible speaks of personal “salvation” it means the state of sins forgiven and in the possession of everlasting life. Biblical salvation is the possession only of those who have put their faith in the finished work of the Christ of the Bible. However, Mormonism teaches that all men are “saved.” By this they mean that all men will be resurrected. At the same time, because their gospel is a progression based upon individual merit, they are ever on the path to salvation, meaning “exaltation.” They (males only) hope someday to be very God! Thus a Mormon, according to their doctrine, may say he is saved because he is speaking of resurrection (which is really all that the Mormon christ has obtained for them) and at the same time say no, he is not saved, because he is speaking about exaltation based on his yet to be accomplished works.

They speak of such things as “damnation” and yet believe virtually all will be saved. In utter contradiction, they speak of salvation as a “gift” that requires holding out faithful to the end. Nothing may correctly be defined as a gift when it requires continued payment. Note this passage from their writings as an example of their confusion and lack of understanding:

If thou wilt do good, yea, and hold out faithful to the end, thou shalt be saved in the kingdom of God; which is the greatest of all gifts of God; for there is no gift greater that the gift of salvation.” (Doctrine and Covenants 6:13)

Out of the maze of Mormonism may be gleaned the following. The Mormon’s speak of “salvation in two ways. The first is a general salvation4 which all will receive, except the devil and a few sons of perdition. This will admit all into the lowest heaven (the Mormons believe in three heavens). They equate this with “resurrection” for all will be resurrected. They teach that this is what Christ accomplished for us, “exemption from the penalty of the fall.”5 Immediately there is a problem reconciling this with the Bible.

“He that believeth in Him is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already…” and “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:18, 36). See also Matthew 10:28; Mark 9:43-48; Isaiah 66:24; Reveation 14:9-11 and 20:11-15.

“And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” (Revelation 14:11)

“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)

The teachings of Mormonism obviously contradict the Bible on this subject. They teach that any who deserve eternal punishment will ultimately redeem themselves, similar to the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory, with the exception of Satan and a few sons of perdition.5

“No soul shall be kept in prison or continue in torment beyond the time requisite to work the needed reformation and to vindicate justice, for which ends the punishment is imposed.6

Then, the Book of Mormon even contradicts their own teaching on this subject:

“…do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end…Ye cannot say when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot do this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that you go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world…ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his…and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.

The second part of Mormon “salvation” is individual salvation7 or often referred to by them as “exaltation.” Here Mormons teach that Christ has provided a way…”whereby mankind may secure remission of personal sins…(by) obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.” In addition, a male Mormon who enters into a marriage covenant “for time and for all eternity” may “pass by the angels, and the gods…Then shall ye be gods, because they have all power.” (Doctrine and Covenants 132)

They also claim that mankind must avail themselves to the officials of Mormonism or they cannot be saved.8

“…except men come to these legal administrators (the Mormons) and learn of Christ and his laws as newly reveled on earth, they cannot be saved.

This is in contradiction to the word of Almighty God and His plan for the salvation of men’s souls.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (1Timothy 2:5)

“That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” (John 1:9)

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37)

CONCLUSION OF THE GOSPEL TEST

It should be abundantly clear that the gospel of which the apostle Paul spoke in Galatians 1:8 is salvation solely and necessarily by faith in the substitutionary work of the Lord Jesus Christ in our place, without any works on the part of the believer. The “gospel” of Mormonism is an attempt to mix the grace of God with the works of man, contrary to the Bible:

“And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” (Romans 11:6)

In Mormonism, the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ is grossly diminished to the place of only providing for the resurrection of man rather than providing the whole of man’s salvation.

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:10-15)

Mormonism is “another gospel” and therefore under the curse of Almighty God!

THE SECOND TEST…PROPHESY

God provided Israel with a means to identify a true or a false prophet. It is found in Deuteronomy 18:20-22. In paraphrase, the test was whether his prophesies came to pass. The false prophet was to die if he failed the test and because he presumed to speak a word in the name of the Lord or he spoke in the name of other gods (we will consider this last phrase later). Let us apply this test to Joseph Smith by considering some of his prophecies.

In the Doctrine and Covenants 57:1-5 (July 1831) is purported to be God speaking to the elders of His church by the Prophet Joseph Smith. They are told the land of Missouri is the “land of promise, and the place for the city of Zion.” They were instructed to purchase as much of the land as they could, near the place called Independence, because it was going to be an “everlasting inheritance” for them.

Doctrine and Covenants 84:1-5 (Sept. 1832) tells us that this was a revelation of Jesus Christ to Joseph Smith. In brief it states that the city of the “New Jerusalem” would be built in the state of Missouri (‘verily, this is the word of the Lord’), beginning at the temple, “which temple shall be reared in this generation. For verily, this generation shall not pass away until an house be built unto the Lord, etc.”

In October of 1838, an extermination order was issued by the governor of Missouri that compelled the Mormons to leave that state. This is clearly stated in the heading of D&C 124. The temple was not built in “that generation” and the Mormons were expelled from their “everlasting inheritance.” Joseph Smith obviously failed the test of God Almighty for a true prophet!

Let us look at one more prophesy, this time in the Book of Mormon. This one was not purported to be made by Joseph Smith, but was on the plates which were supposed to be revealed to him by an angelic messenger from God.

“But behold, the Spirit hath said this much unto me, saying: Cry unto this people saying-Repent ye, and prepare the way of the Lord, and walk in His paths, which are straight; for behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and the Son of God cometh upon the face of the earth. And behold, he shall be born of Mary at Jerusalem…” Alma 7:10

As most everyone knows, the Lord Jesus was born in Bethlehem, exactly as the Bible correctly predicted (Micah 5:2; Matthew 23:1-16). Here, Maroni, Alma and Joseph all failed God’s test for a prophet. Alma prophesied it, Maroni delivered it and Joseph translated it, all purporting to have done so under the direction of God! No one can successfully or honestly contend that these are incorrect representations or taken out of context, for all the information is contained in Mormonism’s own “inspired” writings.

THE THIRD TEST…ARCHAEOLOGY

Does history and archaeology (the study of the remains of the culture of a people) support the “account of the former inhabitants of this continent” as recorded in the Book of Mormon?

In the Book of Alma 50:15 it is stated “and they also began in the same year to build many cities in the north…” Also in Ether 9:23 we read that “…it came to pass…and (they) did build many mighty cities…” The names of some 38 cities are found in the Book of Mormon.

The Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. states, “The Smithsonian Institute has never used the Book of Mormon as a scientific guide. Smithsonian archaeologists see no connection between the archaeology of the New World and the subject matter of the Book of Mormon.” In fact, no known non-Mormon archaeologist gives any credence at all to the “history” recorded in the Book of Mormon!

In addition, the Book of Ether 9:17-19 records horses, asses, oxen, cows, sheep, “swine” (and these folks were descendants of the Jews?), and elephants, which scientists claim were not on the American continent until the Europeans brought them many years later. In other places in Mormon writings, steel and other metals are mentioned which were unheard of at the time of the writing of the events in the Book of Mormon.9

Civilizations leave behind remnants of coins, weapons, building sites and more, but NOTHING that can honestly be proven as remnants of any of the supposed empires recorded in the Book of Mormon exists in South America.

This failure of evidence has been verified and reported by their own Mormon scholars:

(All quotations here are from live interviews with these Mormon scholars published on DVD by “Living Hope Ministries,” Brigham City, Utah…www.lhvm.org)

Quotations from Dr. Thomas Murphy, LDS Anthropologist (raised Mormon):

“There is no real world setting for the events described in the Book of Mormon.”

The LDS take no official position on the geography of the Book of Mormon. The reason

for this is obvious. It’s that the events never took place anywhere!”

It would be nice if we could find evidence.” (for the more than 30 cities spoken of in the

Book of Mormon)

“The Bible is accurate. The Book of Mormon has the wrong plants and animals.”

“We can’t find evidence for the use of metals like gold, silver and copper (mentioned in

the Book of Mormon).”

“There is no documentary trace of the Book of Mormon before it was published in the

1800’s (as there are thousands of the books of the Bible).”

“The Jesus Christ we find presented in the Book of Mormon is the Jesus Christ of Joseph

Smith’s imagination”

“Joseph Smith fabricated a history and presented it to the world as the word of God and

that’s pretty arrogant…very arrogant.”

“The Book of Mormon is factually wrong.”

The Book of Mormon is full of factual mistakes.”

Thomas Stewart Ferguson (a Mormon scholar) spent millions seeking for Book of

Mormon evidence. He found contradictions”

William Wilson, LDS Anthropologist, Northern Arizona University (raised Mormon):

“No maps in the Book of Mormon because they can’t place it on the earth…don’t know

where it is.”

“No evidence of the cities (in the Book of Mormon).”

“You can go today to places in the Bible. You can’t in the Book of Mormon.”

“Story (in the Book of Mormon) of riding horses into battle could not have happened in

the Americas (at the time of which the Book of Mormon speaks).

The Book of Mormon speaks of steel. There is not a single site found where it could be

said that steel was smelted here.”

“Tens of thousands totaling about 230,000 people (according to the Book of Mormon)

were killed in the Palmira Area. I did do archeological work in the Palmira area.

We would have expected to find burial sites, bones, swords, chariots (none found).”

“(There is) no evidence at all that Jesus was in America.”

“The Book of Mormon could not possibly be a history of Ancient America.”

“The chances of the Book of Mormon being true is zero.”

“The Book of Mormon is 19th century religious fiction.”

He could not find anything.” (regarding research by Thomas Stewart Ferguson).

The Book of Mormon isn’t true. (It is) historical fiction. I know the religion

(Mormonism) could not be true.”

Note that there are no maps in the back of the Book of Mormon. This is because the supposed events recorded there never took place anywhere in the world! They were only the imagination of the author. The Mormon church does NOT do archeological exploration at the hill in New York state where a supposed battle in which thousands were killed took place. In addition to remains of human bones, there should be untold thousands of artifacts of weaponry. If they had any confidence in their own writings, an excavation of this site would prove their claims. However, the lack of such remains would be most embarrassing so no effort is made. This speaks clearly to any honest observer.

OTHER MORMON FALLACIES

‘FULLNESS’ NOT FULL

If the plates located for Joseph Smith by Maroni had the fullness of the everlasting gospel contained in them (D&C 20:8-9; 27:5), how is it that Mr. Smith added new revelation to the gospel, and with very strong language? “For behold, I reveal unto you a new and everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory.” D&C 132:4-5. Either the original plates did not contain the fullness of the gospel or later prophesy was spurious…or BOTH are lies!

TEACHINGS ABOUT GOD

Since the Mormons teach the blasphemous lie that man may become God one day (“As man is, God once was; as God is man may become”…James Talmage in ‘The Articles of Faith’), you would expect their teaching about God to be very faulty also. And, indeed it is. They teach God has a body of flesh in spite of this clear statement in the word of God…

“God is a spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

The Mormons cite verses which speak of the “finger, arm, and hands of God” in a vain attempt to support their body of flesh doctrine. They act as though they are not aware that at times God uses metaphor to convey an idea to us. If this is not so, they will have more than a little trouble with “Our God is a consuming fire” of Hebrews 12:29 and the “feathers and wings” of Psalms 91:4.

Their teaching about the Lord Jesus is of course anti-Biblical too. Brigham Young declared, “Jesus Christ was not begotten of the Holy Spirit” in total contradiction to the word of God.

Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

Luke 1:34-35 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Brigham Young taught that Adam was the God of this world and the Lord Jesus Christ came into existence by a sexual relationship between Adam and Mary! The ramifications of this never seem to bother a Mormon. If this filthy lie were true, Mary was a fornicator who deserved to die under the Mosaic law (Deut 22:13) and the product of this union was a bastard who could not have sat on the throne of Israel until the tenth generation of His progeny (Deut 23:2). He therefore, could not possibly have been the “King of the Jews” offering the kingdom to Israel and was obviously a false Messiah! In addition, since the Bible prophesy of the coming Messiah said He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), and the Mormon christ was born of a mother who was not a virgin, then of course the Mormon christ is false.

The Mormon teaching on the person of Christ is blasphemous. They claim He was “the firstborn spirit child” of God the Father and that He attained unto the status of Godhood while yet in the pre-mortal existence.12 Thus they show their ignorance and unbelief of the meaning of the expression “firstborn” as used in the word of God, relative to Christ.

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18)

The Lord Jesus Christ became the “firstborn” in His resurrection (see Acts 13:33), not in some pre-mortal creation as a spirit child. Nor did the Christ of the Bible attain to Godhead sometime after His supposed creation as may clearly be seen from the following:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3)

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.” (Isaiah 43:10-11)

“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.” (Isaiah 44:6)

“Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.” (Isaiah 44:8)

Thus we see the christ of Mormonism is NOT the Christ of the Bible! Therefore, faith in their created christ whose blood was insufficient to wash us from our sins is in vain.

OTHER GODS

May we hearken back to Deut 18:22 and that portion of the test for a false prophet which said if “he spoke in the name of other gods.”

The god of Mormonism is another god. He is certainly not the Almighty God of the Bible Who is “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalms 90:2)! Mormons believe, as clearly seen above, that they may attain to godhood and actually be like the most high God, “from everlasting to everlasting” (D&C 132:20). Those who are familiar with the true word of God will immediately be repulsed and remember the one who originally made such a boast…Satan:

“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds…like the most High.” (Isa 14:14)

This is also the lie Satan held out to Eve and he is still using it on mankind today through Mormonism:

“For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5)

Note these very clear declarations from God Almighty about Himself:

“I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:8)

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.” (Isaiah 43:10)

“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:22)

See also Isaiah 44:6, 8; 45:5-6, 18; Deuteronomy 4:35, 39; 32:39; 2Samuel 7:22 and Psalms 86:8-13.

WATER BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD

Again on the subject of salvation, the Mormons teach and practice water baptism for the dead. They do extensive genealogical work constantly in an effort to locate ones for whom they may perform this vicarious rite. This false doctrine was taught by the already proven false prophet Joseph Smith.

“For a baptismal font there is not upon the earth, that they, my saints, may be baptized for those who are dead….that after you have had sufficient time to build a house to me, wherein the ordinance of baptism for the dead belongeth, and for which the same was instituted from before the foundation of the world…” (D&C 124:29-33 and 128)

You may recall the earlier quote from Alma 34:33-35 where the above was contradicted in their own writings:

“…do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end…Ye cannot say when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot do this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that you go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world…ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his…and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.

A number of true scriptures could be cited from the Bible to squash this antichrist ritual. For example:

“There is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.” 1Tim 2:5

“None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, (for the redemption of his soul is precious, and it ceaseth forever)…” Psalms 49:7-8

Notice here again that the Book of Mormon did not contain the “everlasting gospel” because water baptism for the dead was added later in the “Doctrine and Covenants” by Joseph Smith!

The meaning of 1 Corinthians 15:29 (the verse the Mormons cite in an effort to prove their water baptism for the dead doctrine) has to not only be consistent with all the rest of God’s word, but it must also fit the immediate context. Virtually the entire 15th chapter consists of Paul’s arguments proving the resurrection of Christ and therefore the future resurrection of His children. In the midst of this he asks the question (not states a command), “Else what shall they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead?” In Colossians 2:10-12; Gal 3:27 and Romans 6:3 we read that we (that is, true Christians who have received Jesus Christ as their Saviour), have been baptized into Jesus Christ (notice it does not say into water, but rather right into Jesus Christ)! The very next verse in 1 Corinthians 15 says, “And why stand we in jeopardy every day?” In other words it is fruitless to be in jeopardy every day if the dead One of the preceding verse (Christ into Whom we have been baptized) is not to be resurrected. If that were so, there would be no value in being baptized into a dead Jesus and very foolish to be in daily jeopardy.

POLYGAMY

The Mormon doctrine of POLYGAMY is another unanswerable problem to them. In the Book of Jacob 1:15 and 2:24 it is stated,

“…the people of Nephi, under the reign of the second king, began to grow hard in their hearts, and indulge themselves somewhat in wicked practices, such as like unto David of old desiring many wives and concubines, and also Solomon, his son…Behold David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.”

Then in Doctrine and Covenants 132:38-39 it is stated:

“David also received many wives and concubines and also Solomon and Moses my servants, as also many others of my servants, from the beginning of creation until this time; and in nothing did they sin save in those things which they did not

receive of me. David’s wives and concubines were given him of me (God gave David an abomination?!?)…and in none of these things did he sin against me save in the case of Uriah and his wife…”

As if these contradictions were not bad enough, Joseph Smith contradicts himself! In D&C 42:22 and 49:16 he wrote,

“Thou shalt love thy wife with all thine heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else.”

“Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh…”

CHURCH RESTORATION

Mormon doctrine claims that after the death of the apostles, the church ceased to exist on the earth until Joseph smith was commissioned to restore it.13 This is in contradiction to:

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)

The Mormons use the following verse as though it were prophesying a restoration of the church:14

“Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” (Acts 3:21)

They blatantly fail to appreciate that the verse clearly specifies what will be restored…that which the holy prophets said would be restored, namely the nation of Israel to their land under the Lord Jesus Christ as their King. This was the grand hope of Israel!

“Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.” (Jeremiah 23:7-8)

“And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.” (Ezekiel 37:25)

“To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:” (Acts 1:3)…”When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.” (Acts 1:6-7)

In addition, the church was never mentioned by the prophets in the old scriptures as testified by the apostle Paul (see context of the following verse):

“Which (the church which is Christ’s body) in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;” (Ephesians 3:5)

TWO STICKS

Ezekiel 37:15-17 has been used by Mormons for years in an effort to prove that the Book of Mormon was prophesied in the Bible and that the two sticks mentioned here are the Bible and the Book of Mormon. A simple reading of the rest of the chapter disproves this false position and makes one wonder at such extreme dishonesty. Remember John 4:24, “truth”.

In the prophetic books of the Bible, “Ephraim” and “Israel” (The tribe of Joseph being part of the confederacy) are collective names of the ten tribes who under Jeroboam established the northern kingdom after the death of Solomon. Judah was representative of those who composed the southern kingdom.

APOSTLES AND PROPHETS

The Mormon doctrine defeats itself when they cite Ephesians 4:11 in an effort to prove that the true church must have a living prophet and living apostles on earth today. They point to the phrase “Til we all come to the unity of the Spirit” (Eph 4:13) and ask if that has yet been accomplished. They forget that if the verse is saying we must have “living” apostles and prophets until such a unity is accomplished, then what of their doctrine of no church at all on the earth during the “dark ages” when there was certainly no better unity than today?!?

But what does the verse teach? We must allow the scriptures to speak for themselves. See Eph 2:20 where we are told that the apostles and prophets are in the foundation of the church along with the Lord Jesus Christ Who is the Chief Cornerstone. They are still there as the foundation of God’s true church. We are today living in the superstructure of the church age, not the foundation. If we must have physically living apostles on earth today, who are in the foundation of the church, then it follows that we must also have the Chief Corner Stone, Jesus Christ, alive physically here on the earth today also!

In addition, the apostle Paul was an apostle to the Colossians by writing an epistle to them. They, as well as others, had not seen his “face in the flesh” (Col. 2:1). We enjoy his office as an apostle by the same means as they, by reading the epistles he wrote.

PRE-EXISTENCE

Jeremiah 1:5 is sited by Mormons as a proof text for our existence before being physically born into this world, as though the phrase “I knew thee” meant not the foreknowledge of God but that He knew Jeremiah in another world or existence. Using this logic, Matthew 7:23 would mean that those being condemned at judgment never really existed because God will say, “Depart from me, I never knew you.” Likewise Acts 15:18 would mean that the world and all of God’s creation existed before He created it because “Known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the world.”

Please see Genesis 2:7; John 3:31, 8:23; Romans 9:11 and 1Corinthians 15:46 for the truth on the subject. These verses show again the clear choice each Mormon must make…the word of God as recorded in the Bible or the confused, contradictory word of a false prophet.

THREE DEGREES

The three degrees of heaven which the Mormons try to extract from 1Corinthians 15:39-41 is again abolished by simply reading the context. And again, one has to wonder at such extreme dishonesty! The subject of the apostle Paul in this context is, what kind of body the true children of God will have in the resurrection. He pointed out that there are different kinds of flesh even in this life…flesh of men, of beasts, of fish and of birds. Then he wrote that there also is a difference in celestial (heavenly) and terrestrial (earthly) bodies. Finally, he cited the fact that in the observable heavens there is a difference in the glory of the sun, moon and stars. All of Paul’s arguments were intended to simply convey to his readers that the resurrected body will be different than our present body. None of Paul’s arguments in this context have anything to do with three degrees in a future heaven.

ELDERS

The Mormons claim that they are the restored true church as it was in its origin as described in the Bible. A comparison of Mormon so called “Elders” and the description of Elders in the true church of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Bible quickly dispels any Mormon claim at being the restoration of the Biblical church.

Titus 1:5-6 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

MORMON ‘INSPIRED’ WRITERS ADMIT TO ERRORS

Regarding the “inspiration” of the Book of Mormon, note this comment regarding possible errors in the last statement of the title page:

“And now, if there are any faults they are the mistakes of men; wherefore, condemn not the things of God, that ye may be found spotless at the judgment seat of Christ.” (Title Page, Book of Mormon, 1958)

And these following statements:

“Nevertheless, I do not write anything upon the plates save it be that I think it sacred. And now, if I do err, even did they err of old; not that I would excuse myself because of other men, but because of the weakness which is in me, according to the flesh, I would excuse myself.” (1Nephi 19:6)

“And whoso receiveth this record, and shall not condemn it because of the imperfections which are in it, the same shall know of greater things than these…And if there be faults they be the faults of men. But behold, we know no fault…” (Mormon 8:12 and 17)

“Condemn me not because of mine imperfections, neither my father because of his imperfections, neither them who have written before him; but rather give thanks to God that he hath made manifest unto you our imperfections, that ye may learn to be more wise than we have been…and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfections in our record.” (Mormon 9:31 and 33)

Please contrast the above with the words of the apostle Paul:

“If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.” (1Corinthians 14:37)

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly (thoroughly) furnished unto all good works.” (2Timothy 3:16)

COMMON PROBLEM

When a Mormon sees the errors of the religion he or she has been taught to revere, they are faced with a dilemma. They realize that if they embrace the truth of the word of God and leave the falsehood of Mormonism, they will encounter the wrath and/or tears of their loved ones. To those who may be in this predicament we offer the following considerations.

First, truth is the only path of happiness in this life and for eternity. Only by embracing the truth does a person exhibit true love toward God and toward their loved ones. Forgiveness for sins and where a person will spend eternity are the most important issues. Jesus Christ, the Son of God loves you and has paid the full penalty for your sins. Your first and foremost responsibility is to Him. If you call upon Him for salvation, you will become His child and be immediately added to His true church. By living in the truth, you will not only have the personal peace and joy which God bestows on His children, but may also have the delight of seeing some of your loved ones and friends come to Christ and be saved themselves. Real love can take no course but the truth.

Thank God, he has made the way into His love and grace clear and universally simple and available. It is a fact that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23; Eph 2:1-3) and “the wages of sin is death” (Rom 6:23). Like a drowning man, we can do nothing to save ourselves. God in His mercy and love sent His only begotten Son to live the perfect sinless life we could not live (Heb 7:26), then He died and went to hell in our place (John 3:16; Eph 4:9; Acts 2:27) paying the penalty for our sins. The one verse encapsulation of this truth is found in 2Corinthians 5:21.

“For he (the Father) hath made him (the Son) to be sin for us, who (the Son) knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2Corinthians 5:21)

When a person realizes their “drowning,” helpless condition and cries out to Him for salvation and forgiveness, God hears and responds from heaven!

“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” (Acts 16:31)

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-13)

“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” (Luke 18:13-14)

God saves them and gives them a new life.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2Corinthians 5:17)

At the same moment He places them into His family or church.

“Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” (Acts 2:47)

“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” (2Corinthains 12:13)

Are you willing to forsake your proud efforts at saving yourself and open your heart to the loving forgiveness of Jesus Christ by faith in the work He has already completed for you?

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” (Hebrews 9:22-28)

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
