From a Message: “FORGIVENESS” by Weyman Zelder

What unforgiveness looks like and can become…

roots of bitterness

Heb. 12:14-15 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Roots spring up and bear fruit. Fruit of bitterness…

We need to be very careful what seeds we sow because the first thing a seed sprouts is a root.

Let us plant not seeds of bitterness

Roots are opportunistic — they do not grow in any particular predictable direction.

Root growth flourishes in soils that supply adequate oxygen, water, nutrients, support and warmth.

The roots of bitterness are fed by bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour and evil speaking. Envy and jealousy Eph. 4:31.

Unforgiveness allows it to continue

Unforgiveness allows the roots to grow. The more time that is allowed to go by without forgiveness the deeper and stronger the roots of bitterness will get and more damage will be done. They get a stronger hold. They will spread out more affecting more and more people…

Gal. 5:15 If you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.

How can we take care? Forgive

Kill the roots of bitterness with forgiveness.

Roots of bitterness can become as the bars to the prison of unforgiveness

One of the greatest ways to feed the roots of bitterness is to keep records of wrongs. The hole in the tree is the vault.

I Cor. 13:5 Love does not keep records of wrongs

What happens to wrongs that are not forgiven? They are stored. They are recorded in your mind. Soon you have a list of wrongs of who said what to whom when and where. What can happen as the list gets longer? The roots of bitterness can be fed.

Love is the solution for the sins of I Corinthians 13.

Forgiveness is the way for them to move forward,
