A PERSONAL LETTER TO YOU FROM HEAVEN

Dear ______(your name here)__________ ,

You may not know me yet, but I know you very well. In fact, I know all about you. I saw you while you were still in your mother’s womb (Psa 139:16) and I wonderfully made you (Psa 139:14). I know every word you speak, see every action you take and I know why you do it because I know your thoughts before you do (Psa 139:2-4). I even know the number of hairs on your head (Matt 10:30)! I know every sin you have committed and yet I deeply love you (Rom 5:8). I have also seen you when you wept in secret (Psa 56:8).

After all, I made you in My own image (Gen 1:27). Thus, as my created physical offspring you live and move because of Me (Acts 17:28). Whether you are awake or asleep my thoughts toward you are more than the number of the sand (Psa 139:17-18). Every good thing you have ever received is because and from Me (Jas 1:17).

I have great love and mercy toward you and I want to comfort you in all your pain and sorrow (2Cor 1:3-4). I am near you when you are broken hearted and if you have a contrite spirit I can and will save you (Psa 34:18). Evidence of My love for you is that I did not spare my only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, but allowed Him to die in your place (Rom 8:32) on that awful cross!

I have some really good news for you, in fact, the grandest news! It is not by going to church, submitting to any religious ceremonies or by a list of good works that you may become My blessed child (Tit 3:5). It is by simply believing that Jesus Christ has already paid for all your sins by His death, burial and His resurrection (John 3:16, 1Cor 15:3-4) in your place. I did not send Jesus Christ into the world to condemn you but so that you might be saved and become part of My family!

I promise that if you will simply cry out to Me I will hear you (Psa 40:1 and Rom 10:13) and make you a new creation (2Cor 5:17). I will set your feet on a rock and give you a song in your heart (Psa 40:2-3). If you will trust Me and stop doing things your own way I will direct your life as a loving Father (Pro 3:5-6) and lead you in the paths of righteousness (Psa 23:3). I will take you from your uncertain life into My eternal life (John 3:36). And when it is time for you to come be with Me in heaven, I will arrange a great “Welcome Home” for you into My everlasting kingdom (2Pet 1:11). I am anxiously looking forward to that (Psa 116:15).

My love for and to you is a free gift (Eph 2:8-9), but in order to have it you must be willing to receive it (1Chron 28:9). If you will accept the sacrifice of My Son Jesus Christ as payment for all your sins, I will gladly own you as my forgiven child (1John 3:1-3) and all heaven will rejoice (Luke 15:7). I want to give you a new life (2Cor 5:17) of peace (Rom 5:1). I do not want you to perish (2Pet 3:9). If you are not willing, it will break my heart (Luke 13:34), but I will not force you to become My child.

The very best time to come to Me and be spiritually “born again” (John 3:3) is right NOW (2Cor 6:2)!

Almighty God

(Ps 139:16) Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

(Ps 139:14) I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well

(Ps 139:2-4) You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.

(Mt 10:30) But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

(Ro 5:8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

(Ps 56:8) You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?

(Gen 1:27) So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

(Acts 17:28) for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’

(Ps 139:17-18) How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You

(Jas 1:17) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights…

(2Co 1:3-4) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation…

(Ps 34:18) The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

(Ro 8:32) He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

(Tit 3:5) not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

(Joh 3:16) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

(1Co 15:3-4) For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures

(Psa 40:1) I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.

(Ro 10:13) For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

(2Co 5:17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

(Psa 40:2-3) He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth-Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the LORD.

(Pro 3:5-6) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

(Psa 23:3) He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

(Joh 3:36) He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

(2Pe 1:11) for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

(Ps 116:15) Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints

(Eph 2:8-9) For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works

(2Chron 28:9)…If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.

(1Jo 3:1-3) Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

(Lu 15:7) …there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

(2Co 5:17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

(Rom 5:1) Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

(Lu 13:34) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

(2Pe 3:9) The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

(Joh 3:3) Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

2Co 6:2) For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

MORMONISM

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel* unto you than that which we have preached unto you, LET HIM BE ACCURSED” (Gal 1:8).

*The word “gospel” means “good news” or “glad tidings.” In the case of Galatians 1:8 it is the “good news” of personal salvation.

Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, claimed to have had several visions from God while he was yet in his teens. During one of these appearances an angel by the name of Moroni was supposed to have advised Joseph of the location of a set of golden plates. These plates were to contain “an account of the former inhabitants of this continent”…and…”the fullness of the everlasting gospel was contained in it…” (Joseph Smith 2:34).

TESTS FOR TRUTH

Since we are instructed in the word of God to “prove all things and hold fast to that which is good” (1Thess 5:21), at least three questions should immediately come to mind.

1. How does the gospel ministered by the apostle Paul in the Bible compare with the “fullness of the everlasting gospel” contained in Mormonism?

2. Does Joseph Smith pass God’s test for a true prophet?

3. Does the “account of the former inhabitants of this continent” in the Book of Mormon find verification in history and archaeology as the Bible does with its record?

THE FIRST TEST…THE GOSPEL

The gospel Paul preached and wrote to the Galatians, about which he pronounced a curse on anyone who would teach otherwise, was clearly revealed:

“Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (Galatians 1:3-5)

“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” (Galatians 2:16)

“I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” (Galatians 2:21-3:3)

Paul declared the same gospel to Titus when he wrote:

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5)

He likewise expressed the same truths to the Ephesians when he wrote:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

And to the Romans:

“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” (Romans 4:5)

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” (Romans 10:4)

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation…For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-10, 13)

The apostle Paul and John were in agreement:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36)

And the very words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself teach the same thing:

“Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” (John 6:29)

Thus we see that the Biblical plan of salvation is the substitutionary life, death, burial, and resurrection of The Lord Jesus Christ in the sinner’s place:

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (1Corinthians 15:1-4)

All who truly put their trust in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ on their behalf are thereby “born again.”

“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your

fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God…Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” (1Peter 1:18-21, 23)

The one verse summation of the above is:

“For he (the Father) hath made him (the Lord Jesus Christ) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2Corinthians 5:21)

Jesus Christ took upon Himself the guilt and penalty of our sins. Upon our receiving Him as our Saviour by faith, we have His righteousness put to our credit (see Romans the 4th chapter)!

THE MORMON “GOSPEL”

What is the Mormon plan or “gospel” of salvation and how does it match with that which the apostle Paul was moved of Almighty God to minister?

The Mormon “gospel” has four initial steps:1

1. Faith in the christ of Mormonism (this christ will be defined later)

2. Repentance

3. Water baptism for the remission of sins

4. Laying on of hands for the receipt of the Holy Spirit

These four steps must then be followed by a life of obedience. Note these verses from the Book of Mormon:

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart…with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism…then ye shall receive the Holy Ghost,…then cometh the baptism of fire…he that endureth to the end, shall be saved…unless a man shall endure to the end, in following the example of the Son…he cannot be saved…the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost…after ye have gotten into this straight and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, NAY…ye must press forward with steadfastness…and endure to the end…Ye shall have eternal life…this is the way and there is none other way…” (2Nephi 31:13-21)

However, while we are clearly instructed by Mormonism that there is “none other way” in the above, an account in the Book of Mormon is given of a man alone in the forest whose sins were “forgiven” and who had his “guilt swept away” as the result of his crying unto his Maker in mighty prayer and supplication all day and into the night (Enos 1:1-8). He was forgiven without water baptism or laying on of hands!

Mormon teaching utterly renounces salvation simply by faith in the finished work of Christ as sufficient for the salvation of mankind:

“…a most pernicious (Webster’s Dictionary…highly injurious or destructive) doctrine – that of justification by belief alone. The Savior taught that works were essential to the validity of profession and the efficacy (Webster’s Dictionary…power to produce effects) of faith.”2

“Christians speak often of the blood of Christ. Much that is believed and taught on this subject, however, is such utter nonsense and so palpably false that to believe it is to lose one’s salvation. For instance, many believe or pretend to believe that if we confess Christ with our lips and avow that we accept him as our personal Savior, we are thereby saved. They say that His blood without any other act than mere belief, makes us clean.”3 (Please see again Romans 10:9-13)

The above false teaching of Mormonism is inexcusable in the light of:

“And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they (Paul and Silas) said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” (Acts 16:30-31)

“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood” (Revelation 1:5)

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:” (Colossians 1:14)

The Mormons change the definition of Biblical words and thus cause confusion and misunderstanding. When the Bible speaks of personal “salvation” it means the state of sins forgiven and in the possession of everlasting life. Biblical salvation is the possession only of those who have put their faith in the finished work of the Christ of the Bible. However, Mormonism teaches that all men are “saved.” By this they mean that all men will be resurrected. At the same time, because their gospel is a progression based upon individual merit, they are ever on the path to salvation, meaning “exaltation.” They (males only) hope someday to be very God! Thus a Mormon, according to their doctrine, may say he is saved because he is speaking of resurrection (which is really all that the Mormon christ has obtained for them) and at the same time say no, he is not saved, because he is speaking about exaltation based on his yet to be accomplished works.

They speak of such things as “damnation” and yet believe virtually all will be saved. In utter contradiction, they speak of salvation as a “gift” that requires holding out faithful to the end. Nothing may correctly be defined as a gift when it requires continued payment. Note this passage from their writings as an example of their confusion and lack of understanding:

If thou wilt do good, yea, and hold out faithful to the end, thou shalt be saved in the kingdom of God; which is the greatest of all gifts of God; for there is no gift greater that the gift of salvation.” (Doctrine and Covenants 6:13)

Out of the maze of Mormonism may be gleaned the following. The Mormon’s speak of “salvation in two ways. The first is a general salvation4 which all will receive, except the devil and a few sons of perdition. This will admit all into the lowest heaven (the Mormons believe in three heavens). They equate this with “resurrection” for all will be resurrected. They teach that this is what Christ accomplished for us, “exemption from the penalty of the fall.”5 Immediately there is a problem reconciling this with the Bible.

“He that believeth in Him is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already…” and “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:18, 36). See also Matthew 10:28; Mark 9:43-48; Isaiah 66:24; Reveation 14:9-11 and 20:11-15.

“And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” (Revelation 14:11)

“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)

The teachings of Mormonism obviously contradict the Bible on this subject. They teach that any who deserve eternal punishment will ultimately redeem themselves, similar to the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory, with the exception of Satan and a few sons of perdition.5

“No soul shall be kept in prison or continue in torment beyond the time requisite to work the needed reformation and to vindicate justice, for which ends the punishment is imposed.6

Then, the Book of Mormon even contradicts their own teaching on this subject:

“…do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end…Ye cannot say when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot do this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that you go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world…ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his…and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.

The second part of Mormon “salvation” is individual salvation7 or often referred to by them as “exaltation.” Here Mormons teach that Christ has provided a way…”whereby mankind may secure remission of personal sins…(by) obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.” In addition, a male Mormon who enters into a marriage covenant “for time and for all eternity” may “pass by the angels, and the gods…Then shall ye be gods, because they have all power.” (Doctrine and Covenants 132)

They also claim that mankind must avail themselves to the officials of Mormonism or they cannot be saved.8

“…except men come to these legal administrators (the Mormons) and learn of Christ and his laws as newly reveled on earth, they cannot be saved.

This is in contradiction to the word of Almighty God and His plan for the salvation of men’s souls.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; (1Timothy 2:5)

“That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” (John 1:9)

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37)

CONCLUSION OF THE GOSPEL TEST

It should be abundantly clear that the gospel of which the apostle Paul spoke in Galatians 1:8 is salvation solely and necessarily by faith in the substitutionary work of the Lord Jesus Christ in our place, without any works on the part of the believer. The “gospel” of Mormonism is an attempt to mix the grace of God with the works of man, contrary to the Bible:

“And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” (Romans 11:6)

In Mormonism, the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ is grossly diminished to the place of only providing for the resurrection of man rather than providing the whole of man’s salvation.

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” (Colossians 2:10-15)

Mormonism is “another gospel” and therefore under the curse of Almighty God!

THE SECOND TEST…PROPHESY

God provided Israel with a means to identify a true or a false prophet. It is found in Deuteronomy 18:20-22. In paraphrase, the test was whether his prophesies came to pass. The false prophet was to die if he failed the test and because he presumed to speak a word in the name of the Lord or he spoke in the name of other gods (we will consider this last phrase later). Let us apply this test to Joseph Smith by considering some of his prophecies.

In the Doctrine and Covenants 57:1-5 (July 1831) is purported to be God speaking to the elders of His church by the Prophet Joseph Smith. They are told the land of Missouri is the “land of promise, and the place for the city of Zion.” They were instructed to purchase as much of the land as they could, near the place called Independence, because it was going to be an “everlasting inheritance” for them.

Doctrine and Covenants 84:1-5 (Sept. 1832) tells us that this was a revelation of Jesus Christ to Joseph Smith. In brief it states that the city of the “New Jerusalem” would be built in the state of Missouri (‘verily, this is the word of the Lord’), beginning at the temple, “which temple shall be reared in this generation. For verily, this generation shall not pass away until an house be built unto the Lord, etc.”

In October of 1838, an extermination order was issued by the governor of Missouri that compelled the Mormons to leave that state. This is clearly stated in the heading of D&C 124. The temple was not built in “that generation” and the Mormons were expelled from their “everlasting inheritance.” Joseph Smith obviously failed the test of God Almighty for a true prophet!

Let us look at one more prophesy, this time in the Book of Mormon. This one was not purported to be made by Joseph Smith, but was on the plates which were supposed to be revealed to him by an angelic messenger from God.

“But behold, the Spirit hath said this much unto me, saying: Cry unto this people saying-Repent ye, and prepare the way of the Lord, and walk in His paths, which are straight; for behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and the Son of God cometh upon the face of the earth. And behold, he shall be born of Mary at Jerusalem…” Alma 7:10

As most everyone knows, the Lord Jesus was born in Bethlehem, exactly as the Bible correctly predicted (Micah 5:2; Matthew 23:1-16). Here, Maroni, Alma and Joseph all failed God’s test for a prophet. Alma prophesied it, Maroni delivered it and Joseph translated it, all purporting to have done so under the direction of God! No one can successfully or honestly contend that these are incorrect representations or taken out of context, for all the information is contained in Mormonism’s own “inspired” writings.

THE THIRD TEST…ARCHAEOLOGY

Does history and archaeology (the study of the remains of the culture of a people) support the “account of the former inhabitants of this continent” as recorded in the Book of Mormon?

In the Book of Alma 50:15 it is stated “and they also began in the same year to build many cities in the north…” Also in Ether 9:23 we read that “…it came to pass…and (they) did build many mighty cities…” The names of some 38 cities are found in the Book of Mormon.

The Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. states, “The Smithsonian Institute has never used the Book of Mormon as a scientific guide. Smithsonian archaeologists see no connection between the archaeology of the New World and the subject matter of the Book of Mormon.” In fact, no known non-Mormon archaeologist gives any credence at all to the “history” recorded in the Book of Mormon!

In addition, the Book of Ether 9:17-19 records horses, asses, oxen, cows, sheep, “swine” (and these folks were descendants of the Jews?), and elephants, which scientists claim were not on the American continent until the Europeans brought them many years later. In other places in Mormon writings, steel and other metals are mentioned which were unheard of at the time of the writing of the events in the Book of Mormon.9

Civilizations leave behind remnants of coins, weapons, building sites and more, but NOTHING that can honestly be proven as remnants of any of the supposed empires recorded in the Book of Mormon exists in South America.

This failure of evidence has been verified and reported by their own Mormon scholars:

Quotations from Dr. Thomas Murphy, LDS Anthropologist (raised Mormon):

“There is no real world setting for the events described in the Book of Mormon.”

The LDS take no official position on the geography of the Book of Mormon. The reason

for this is obvious. It’s that the events never took place anywhere!”

It would be nice if we could find evidence.” (for the more than 30 cities spoken of in the

Book of Mormon)

“The Bible is accurate. The Book of Mormon has the wrong plants and animals.”

“We can’t find evidence for the use of metals like gold, silver and copper (mentioned in

the Book of Mormon).”

“There is no documentary trace of the Book of Mormon before it was published in the

1800’s (as there are thousands of the books of the Bible).”

Thomas Stewart Ferguson (a Mormon scholar) spent millions seeking for Book of

Mormon evidence. He found contradictions”

William Wilson, LDS Anthropologist, Northern Arizona University (raised Mormon):

“No maps in the Book of Mormon because they can’t place it on the earth…don’t know

where it is.”

“No evidence of the cities (in the Book of Mormon).”

“You can go today to places in the Bible. You can’t in the Book of Mormon.”

“Story (in the Book of Mormon) of riding horses into battle could not have happened in

the Americas (at the time of which the Book of Mormon speaks).

The Book of Mormon speaks of steel. There is not a single site found where it could be

said that steel was smelted here.”

“Tens of thousands totaling about 230,000 people (according to the Book of Mormon)

were killed in the Palmira Area. I did do archeological work in the Palmira area.

We would have expected to find burial sites, bones, swords, chariots (none found).”

“(There is) no evidence at all that Jesus was in America.”

“The Book of Mormon could not possibly be a history of Ancient America.”

“The chances of the Book of Mormon being true is zero.”

“The Book of Mormon is 19th century religious fiction.”

The Book of Mormon isn’t true. (It is) historical fiction. I know the religion

(Mormonism) could not be true.”

Note that there are no maps in the back of the Book of Mormon. This is because the supposed events recorded there never took place anywhere in the world! They were only the imagination of the author. The Mormon church does NOT do archeological exploration at the hill in New York state where a supposed battle in which thousands were killed took place. In addition to remains of human bones, there should be untold thousands of artifacts of weaponry. If they had any confidence in their own writings, an excavation of this site would prove their claims. However, the lack of such remains would be most embarrassing so no effort is made. This speaks clearly to any honest observer.

OTHER MORMON FALLACIES

‘FULLNESS’ NOT FULL

If the plates located for Joseph Smith by Maroni had the fullness of the everlasting gospel contained in them (D&C 20:8-9; 27:5), how is it that Mr. Smith added new revelation to the gospel, and with very strong language? “For behold, I reveal unto you a new and everlasting covenant; and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned; for no one can reject this covenant and be permitted to enter into my glory.” D&C 132:4-5. Either the original plates did not contain the fullness of the gospel or later prophesy was spurious…or BOTH are lies!

TEACHINGS ABOUT GOD

Since the Mormons teach the blasphemous lie that man may become God one day (“As man is, God once was; as God is man may become”…James Talmage in ‘The Articles of Faith’), you would expect their teaching about God to be very faulty also. And, indeed it is. They teach God has a body of flesh in spite of this clear statement in the word of God…

“God is a spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

The Mormons cite verses which speak of the “finger, arm, and hands of God” in a vain attempt to support their body of flesh doctrine. They act as though they are not aware that at times God uses metaphor to convey an idea to us. If this is not so, they will have more than a little trouble with “Our God is a consuming fire” of Hebrews 12:29 and the “feathers and wings” of Psalms 91:4.

Their teaching about the Lord Jesus is of course anti-Biblical too. Brigham Young declared, “Jesus Christ was not begotten of the Holy Spirit” in total contradiction to the word of God.

Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

Luke 1:34-35 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Brigham Young taught that Adam was the God of this world and the Lord Jesus Christ came into existence by a sexual relationship between Adam and Mary! The ramifications of this never seem to bother a Mormon. If this filthy lie were true, Mary was a fornicator who deserved to die under the Mosaic law (Deut 22:13) and the product of this union was a bastard who could not have sat on the throne of Israel until the tenth generation of His progeny (Deut 23:2). He therefore, could not possibly have been the “King of the Jews” offering the kingdom to Israel and was obviously a false Messiah! In addition, since the Bible prophesy of the coming Messiah said He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), and the Mormon christ was born of a mother who was not a virgin, then of course the Mormon christ is false.

The Mormon teaching on the person of Christ is blasphemous. They claim He was “the firstborn spirit child” of God the Father and that He attained unto the status of Godhood while yet in the pre-mortal existence.12 Thus they show their ignorance and unbelief of the meaning of the expression “firstborn” as used in the word of God, relative to Christ.

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18)

The Lord Jesus Christ became the “firstborn” in His resurrection (see Acts 13:33), not in some pre-mortal creation as a spirit child. Nor did the Christ of the Bible attain to Godhead sometime after His supposed creation as may clearly be seen from the following:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3)

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.” (Isaiah 43:10-11)

“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.” (Isaiah 44:6)

“Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.” (Isaiah 44:8)

Thus we see the christ of Mormonism is NOT the Christ of the Bible! Therefore, faith in their created christ whose blood was insufficient to wash us from our sins is in vain.

OTHER GODS

May we hearken back to Deut 18:22 and that portion of the test for a false prophet which said if “he spoke in the name of other gods.”

The god of Mormonism is another god. He is certainly not the Almighty God of the Bible Who is “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalms 90:2)! Mormons believe, as clearly seen above, that they may attain to godhood and actually be like the most high God, “from everlasting to everlasting” (D&C 132:20). Those who are familiar with the true word of God will immediately be repulsed and remember the one who originally made such a boast…Satan:

“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds…like the most High.” (Isa 14:14)

This is also the lie Satan held out to Eve and he is still using it on mankind today through Mormonism:

“For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5)

Note these very clear declarations from God Almighty about Himself:

“I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:8)

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.” (Isaiah 43:10)

“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:22)

WATER BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD

Again on the subject of salvation, the Mormons teach and practice water baptism for the dead. They do extensive genealogical work constantly in an effort to locate ones for whom they may perform this vicarious rite. This false doctrine was taught by the already proven false prophet Joseph Smith.

“For a baptismal font there is not upon the earth, that they, my saints, may be baptized for those who are dead….that after you have had sufficient time to build a house to me, wherein the ordinance of baptism for the dead belongeth, and for which the same was instituted from before the foundation of the world…” (D&C 124:29-33 and 128)

You may recall the earlier quote from Alma 34:33-35 where the above was contradicted in their own writings:

“…do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end…Ye cannot say when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot do this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that you go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world…ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his…and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.

A number of true scriptures could be cited from the Bible to squash this antichrist ritual. For example:

“There is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.” 1Tim 2:5

“None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, (for the redemption of his soul is precious, and it ceaseth forever)…” Psalms 49:7-8

Notice here again that the Book of Mormon did not contain the “everlasting gospel” because water baptism for the dead was added later in the “Doctrine and Covenants” by Joseph Smith!

The meaning of 1 Corinthians 15:29 (the verse the Mormons cite in an effort to prove their water baptism for the dead doctrine) has to not only be consistent with all the rest of God’s word, but it must also fit the immediate context. Virtually the entire 15th chapter consists of Paul’s arguments proving the resurrection of Christ and therefore the future resurrection of His children. In the midst of this he asks the question (not states a command), “Else what shall they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead?” In Colossians 2:10-12; Gal 3:27 and Romans 6:3 we read that we (that is, true Christians who have received Jesus Christ as their Saviour), have been baptized into Jesus Christ (notice it does not say into water, but rather right into Jesus Christ)! The very next verse in 1 Corinthians 15 says, “And why stand we in jeopardy every day?” In other words it is fruitless to be in jeopardy every day if the dead One of the preceding verse (Christ into Whom we have been baptized) is not to be resurrected. If that were so, there would be no value in being baptized into a dead Jesus and very foolish to be in daily jeopardy.

POLYGAMY

The Mormon doctrine of POLYGAMY is another unanswerable problem to them. In the Book of Jacob 1:15 and 2:24 it is stated,

“…the people of Nephi, under the reign of the second king, began to grow hard in their hearts, and indulge themselves somewhat in wicked practices, such as like unto David of old desiring many wives and concubines, and also Solomon, his son…Behold David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.”

Then in Doctrine and Covenants 132:38-39 it is stated:

“David also received many wives and concubines and also Solomon and Moses my servants, as also many others of my servants, from the beginning of creation until this time; and in nothing did they sin save in those things which they did not

receive of me. David’s wives and concubines were given him of me (God gave David an abomination?!?)…and in none of these things did he sin against me save in the case of Uriah and his wife…”

As if these contradictions were not bad enough, Joseph Smith contradicts himself! In D&C 42:22 and 49:16 he wrote,

“Thou shalt love thy wife with all thine heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else.”

“Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh…”

CHURCH RESTORATION

Mormon doctrine claims that after the death of the apostles, the church ceased to exist on the earth until Joseph smith was commissioned to restore it.13 This is in contradiction to:

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)

The Mormons use the following verse as though it were prophesying a restoration of the church:14

“Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” (Acts 3:21)

They blatantly fail to appreciate that the verse clearly specifies what will be restored…that which the holy prophets said would be restored, namely the nation of Israel to their land under the Lord Jesus Christ as their King. This was the grand hope of Israel!

“Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.” (Jeremiah 23:7-8)

“And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.” (Ezekiel 37:25)

“To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:” (Acts 1:3)…”When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.” (Acts 1:6-7)

In addition, the church was never mentioned by the prophets in the old scriptures as testified by the apostle Paul (see context of the following verse):

“Which (the church which is Christ’s body) in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;” (Ephesians 3:5)

TWO STICKS

Ezekiel 37:15-17 has been used by Mormons for years in an effort to prove that the Book of Mormon was prophesied in the Bible and that the two sticks mentioned here are the Bible and the Book of Mormon. A simple reading of the rest of the chapter disproves this false position and makes one wonder at such extreme dishonesty. Remember John 4:24, “truth”.

In the prophetic books of the Bible, “Ephraim” and “Israel” (The tribe of Joseph being part of the confederacy) are collective names of the ten tribes who under Jeroboam established the northern kingdom after the death of Solomon. Judah was representative of those who composed the southern kingdom.

APOSTLES AND PROPHETS

The Mormon doctrine defeats itself when they cite Ephesians 4:11 in an effort to prove that the true church must have a living prophet and living apostles on earth today. They point to the phrase “Til we all come to the unity of the Spirit” (Eph 4:13) and ask if that has yet been accomplished. They forget that if the verse is saying we must have “living” apostles and prophets until such a unity is accomplished, then what of their doctrine of no church at all on the earth during the “dark ages” when there was certainly no better unity than today?!?

But what does the verse teach? We must allow the scriptures to speak for themselves. See Eph 2:20 where we are told that the apostles and prophets are in the foundation of the church along with the Lord Jesus Christ Who is the Chief Cornerstone. They are still there as the foundation of God’s true church. We are today living in the superstructure of the church age, not the foundation. If we must have physically living apostles on earth today, who are in the foundation of the church, then it follows that we must also have the Chief Corner Stone, Jesus Christ, alive physically here on the earth today also!

In addition, the apostle Paul was an apostle to the Colossians by writing an epistle to them. They, as well as others, had not seen his “face in the flesh” (Col. 2:1). We enjoy his office as an apostle by the same means as they, by reading the epistles he wrote.

PRE-EXISTENCE

Jeremiah 1:5 is sited by Mormons as a proof text for our existence before being physically born into this world, as though the phrase “I knew thee” meant not the foreknowledge of God but that He knew Jeremiah in another world or existence. Using this logic, Matthew 7:23 would mean that those being condemned at judgment never really existed because God will say, “Depart from me, I never knew you.” Likewise Acts 15:18 would mean that the world and all of God’s creation existed before He created it because “Known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the world.”

Please see Genesis 2:7; John 3:31, 8:23; Romans 9:11 and 1Corinthians 15:46 for the truth on the subject. These verses show again the clear choice each Mormon must make…the word of God as recorded in the Bible or the confused, contradictory word of a false prophet.

THREE DEGREES

The three degrees of heaven which the Mormons try to extract from 1Corinthians 15:39-41 is again abolished by simply reading the context. And again, one has to wonder at such extreme dishonesty! The subject of the apostle Paul in this context is, what kind of body the true children of God will have in the resurrection. He pointed out that there are different kinds of flesh even in this life…flesh of men, of beasts, of fish and of birds. Then he wrote that there also is a difference in celestial (heavenly) and terrestrial (earthly) bodies. Finally, he cited the fact that in the observable heavens there is a difference in the glory of the sun, moon and stars. All of Paul’s arguments were intended to simply convey to his readers that the resurrected body will be different than our present body. None of Paul’s arguments in this context have anything to do with three degrees in a future heaven.

ELDERS

The Mormons claim that they are the restored true church as it was in its origin as described in the Bible. A comparison of Mormon so called “Elders” and the description of Elders in the true church of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Bible quickly dispels any Mormon claim at being the restoration of the Biblical church.

Titus 1:5-6 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

MORMON ‘INSPIRED’ WRITERS ADMIT TO ERRORS

Regarding the “inspiration” of the Book of Mormon, note this comment regarding possible errors in the last statement of the title page:

“And now, if there are any faults they are the mistakes of men; wherefore, condemn not the things of God, that ye may be found spotless at the judgment seat of Christ.” (Title Page, Book of Mormon, 1958)

And these following statements:

“Nevertheless, I do not write anything upon the plates save it be that I think it sacred. And now, if I do err, even did they err of old; not that I would excuse myself because of other men, but because of the weakness which is in me, according to the flesh, I would excuse myself.” (1Nephi 19:6)

“And whoso receiveth this record, and shall not condemn it because of the imperfections which are in it, the same shall know of greater things than these…And if there be faults they be the faults of men. But behold, we know no fault…” (Mormon 8:12 and 17)

“Condemn me not because of mine imperfections, neither my father because of his imperfections, neither them who have written before him; but rather give thanks to God that he hath made manifest unto you our imperfections, that ye may learn to be more wise than we have been…and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfections in our record.” (Mormon 9:31 and 33)

Please contrast the above with the words of the apostle Paul:

“If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.” (1Corinthians 14:37)

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly (thoroughly) furnished unto all good works.” (2Timothy 3:16)

COMMON PROBLEM

When a Mormon sees the errors of the religion he or she has been taught to revere, they are faced with a dilemma. They realize that if they embrace the truth of the word of God and leave the falsehood of Mormonism, they will encounter the wrath and/or tears of their loved ones. To those who may be in this predicament we offer the following considerations.

First, truth is the only path of happiness in this life and for eternity. Only by embracing the truth does a person exhibit true love toward God and toward their loved ones. Forgiveness for sins and where a person will spend eternity are the most important issues. Jesus Christ, the Son of God loves you and has paid the full penalty for your sins. Your first and foremost responsibility is to Him. If you call upon Him for salvation, you will become His child and be immediately added to His true church. By living in the truth, you will not only have the personal peace and joy which God bestows on His children, but may also have the delight of seeing some of your loved ones and friends come to Christ and be saved themselves. Real love can take no course but the truth.

Thank God, he has made the way into His love and grace clear and universally simple and available. It is a fact that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23; Eph 2:1-3) and “the wages of sin is death” (Rom 6:23). Like a drowning man, we can do nothing to save ourselves. God in His mercy and love sent His only begotten Son to live the perfect sinless life we could not live (Heb 7:26), then He died and went to hell in our place (John 3:16; Eph 4:9; Acts 2:27) paying the penalty for our sins. The one verse encapsulation of this truth is found in 2Corinthians 5:21.

“For he (the Father) hath made him (the Son) to be sin for us, who (the Son) knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2Corinthians 5:21)

When a person realizes their “drowning,” helpless condition and cries out to Him for salvation and forgiveness, God hears and responds from heaven!

“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” (Acts 16:31)

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-13)

“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” (Luke 18:13-14)

God saves them and gives them a new life.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2Corinthians 5:17)

At the same moment He places them into His family or church.

“Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” (Acts 2:47)

“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” (2Corinthains 12:13)

Are you willing to forsake your proud efforts at saving yourself and open your heart to the loving forgiveness of Jesus Christ by faith in the work He has already completed for you?

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” (Hebrews 9:22-28)

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

1. THE GOSPEL…What the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us.

The gospel or “good news” of personal salvation is not what we can do for the Lord Jesus Christ, but what He has already done for us!

Isaiah 53:5-6 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 53:11 “He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.”

I Corinthians 15:1-5 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

John 14:19 “Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.”

2. WHAT WE ARE NATURALLY, WITHOUT CHRIST

To believe that a person could lose their salvation is to believe that we have some innate ability to do good, contrary to the following scriptures. When a person is saved he already has an old nature with which he was born (Eph 4:24) but now, he possesses a new nature (Eph 4:26). The old nature is incapable of gaining or maintaining his salvation (See Romans 8:5-8). The new nature is incapable of losing his salvation.

Ephesians 2:1-3 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Romans 3:10-11 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

3. NOW…WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?

Acts 10:43 “To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.”

Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Galatians 3:26 “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”

Psalms 21:4 “He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.”

Titus 3:5-6 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

4. SALVATION IS A “GIFT” FROM GOD…(it has to be!)

Romans 3:24 “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:”

Romans 5:17 “For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

Romans 6:3-4 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

GOD OWNS US

I Corinthians 6:19-20 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

I Corinthians 3:23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD

I John 3:1-2 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

JESUS CHRIST DWELLS WITHIN US

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS IMPUTED UNTO US

Romans 9:30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

II Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

WE ARE “SEALED” WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

WE ARE “IN CHRIST”

II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Eph 1:6 “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”

WE ARE KEPT BY THE POWER OF GOD, HIMSELF

I Peter 1:4-5 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Romans 5:9-11 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

John 10:29 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

WE ARE COMPLETE

Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

1 Corinthians 1:30 “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:”

WE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE

Titus 1:2 “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”

If a child of God at some point could lose eternal life, the life God gave him would not be eternal but only lasted as long as His child had it. God would thus be a liar!

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

John 10:27-30 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, who gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

I John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

6. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR ‘STANDING’ (or position)

IN CHRIST AND OUR ‘STATE’ (or walk)

None of the above are ours by self-denial, holy living, ceremony participation, alms giving or any form of diligence. All are the gift of God by faith in the finished work of Christ. They are our “standing” in Christ. We are constantly exhorted in the scriptures to raise our ‘state’ (or walk) to the level of our ‘standing’ in Christ.

EXAMPLE OF THE CORINTHIANS:

THEIR “STANDING” (position) IN CHRIST:

I Corinthians 1:4-9 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

EXHORTATION TO RAISE THEIR “STATE” (walk):

I Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

EXAMPLE OF THE COLOSSIANS:

THEIR “STANDING” (position) IN CHRIST:

Colossians 1:12-14 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

EXHORTATION TO RAISE THEIR “STATE” (walk):

Colossians 3:8-9 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

7. THE TWO NATURES OF THE BELIEVER

THE ‘OLD MAN’ (not one bit better after salvation)

Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Galatians 5:16-17 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

THE ‘NEW MAN’

Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Please note that the old nature is incapable of gaining or maintaining our salvation (See Romans 8:5-8) and the new nature is incapable of losing our salvation.

God’s exhortation is to put off the old man and put on the new (Eph 4:17-29). The motivating factor that is brought to the Christians to obey this exhortation is NOT the threat of loss of salvation, but rather “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” (Eph 4:30 KJV)

8. NO SAVED PERSON IN THE SCRIPTURES WAS EVER LOST

EXAMPLES OF SINS THAT DID NOT CAUSE LOSS OF SALVATION:

1 Corinthians 5:1-5 “It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife. And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed, In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ. To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.”

1 Corinthians 3:9-15 “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

COMMANDS TO SEPARATE FROM A SINNING BROTHER

We have no commands in the scriptures to ‘mark,’ ‘avoid,’ have no company with,’ unsaved people, but we do have several commands to do so to a sinning ‘brother.’ Obviously, such a one has not lost his salvation because he is still a brother because God is His Father, even though he has been so wrong he must be avoided.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11 “I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators. Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.”

2 Thessalonians 3:6 “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.”

2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 “And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.”

9. GOD’S PRONOUNCEMENT OF DOOM

Note the fact that God ‘never knew’ the doomed. They are not people who were once His children by faith in Christ.

Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Contrast this with:

John 10:29 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Heb 13:5 “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

10. SERVICE IN LOVE, NOT IN FEAR OF LOSS OF SALVATION

John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

1 Corinthians 1:10 “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

2 Corinthians 10:1 “Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:”

We are “FREE” to serve the Lord Jesus Christ in love, not in slavish fear.

IT IS NOT TRY BUT TRUST

Not saved are we by trying

From self can come no aid.

‘Tis on the blood relying

Once for our ransom paid.

No deeds of ours are needed

To make Christ’s merit more

No frames of mind or feelings

Can add to His great store.

‘Tis simply to receive Him.

The Holy One and Just.

‘Tis only to believe Him

It is not try but trust!

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

1. SOME VERSES MIS-USED TO TEACH SAVED MAY BE LOST

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

The believer is commanded to “work out” the salvation he already has, not work for or to maintain his salvation.

James 2:20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

If this verse is teaching “work” for maintaining salvation then the “gospel” is NOT the “good news” of Christ dying for our sins but a works program! It is faith plus works, contrary to Romans 6:11.

A simple reading of the context will show that James is speaking of the fact that works are the only way to show that a person is saved…”I will show you my faith by my works.” James gives the example of Abraham who was saved in Genesis 15 by faith but then proved he was indeed the friend of God by offering his son on the alter in Genesis 22.

Matthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Again, this verse is misused to teach “works” for salvation. The truth is that the context is speaking about physically enduring to the end of the “Tribulation Period” and thus being physically saved. Simply read on in the chapter.

I Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

The vain belief Paul speaks of here is in regards to his arguments that Christ is indeed risen form the dead. If Christ be not risen then your faith in Him is vain.

II Peter 2:22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Is the saved person a sheep or simply a washed sow? Again, a reading of the context will reveal that the persons spoken of here are not saved people.

Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

It is strange that most everyone who believes they may loose their salvation also believe they may repent and regain their salvation…being born again, again and again. However, if the above passages are teaching that a saved person can loose their salvation they indeed may NOT be saved again!

The truth is that the context is speaking of persons whom God has enlightened, but they have turned away in their unsaved condition and become reprobate.

ebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Once again, reading the context reveals the persons spoken of are ones who have been exposed to the gospel but have trampled it under foot. They have received the knowledge of the truth and rejected it. There is no other sacrifice for sins!

Galatians 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

This is a warning based on the fact that we are saved by grace. Any who attempt to be saved by works have “fallen from grace.”

 

Galatians 5:19- 21 “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness. Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

The point is that Christians should not act like the unsaved who have no inheritance in the kingdom of God as we do. See this similar thought in the following:

1 Cor 6:9-11″Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”

THE WILLS OF GOD

The sovereign will of God:

This “will” of God is certain and cannot be altered nor stopped.

Gen 8:22. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Jer 31:35. Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: 36. If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. 37. Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

Dan 4:17. This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

Rev 17:17. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

John 3:16. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The desired will of God:

This “will” reveals the preference of God and the path of blessing for man. Men may violate and ignore this “will” to their own hurt.

Matt 23:37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Acts 17:30. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

(Obviously, all men are not obeying this command, or will, of God.)

Eph 6:5. Servants, be obedient to them that are [your] masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; 6. Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

(Obviously, not all Christians are serving their masters according to this will of God.)

1Ths 4:3. For this is the will of God, [even] your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

(Obviously, not all Christians have abstained from fornication, thus violating God’s desired will.)

1Tim 2:1. I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2. For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4. Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

2Pet 3:9. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

(Obviously, many men are ignoring and disobeying God’s will in not repenting and they will perish contrary to God’s desired will for them.)

SOUL’S SALVATION

The Method:

On the subject of an individual’s soul salvation, we find the method by which one is saved is the “sovereign will” of God. It may not be altered nor stopped:

John 14:6. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Acts 4:12. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Acts 10:43. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

1Tim 2:5. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

The Application:

That all men should obey this method is the “desired will” of God. It is God’s preference and man’s blessing if man will obey. God has sovereignly ordained that man may resist His desired will, to man’s eternal hurt.

1Tim 2:4. Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Acts 17:30. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

THE COMPLETE SACRIFICE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST FOR ALL MANKIND

1John 2:2. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

John 1:29. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 3:16. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

1Tim 2:6. Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Isa 53:6. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

1Tim 4:10. For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

(Note the special distinction of the last phrase of this verse.)

Heb 2:9. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Heb 10:26. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27. But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28. He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

(Note that the unsaved man who has “trodden under foot the Son of God” had the “blood of the covenant” sanctifying him. It obviously was not able to bring his salvation to fruition because he sinned “willfully after” he received the “knowledge of the truth.”)

2Pet 2:1. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. (Note the Lord “bought” the unsaved “false teachers” who denied Him and brought in “damnable heresies.”)

2Cor 5:19. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Rom 5:18. Therefore as by the offense of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

ACTS 17:30. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31. Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

UNSAVED MAN IS NOT TOTALLY BLIND NOR TOTALLY DEAF

God in His love sees to it that unsaved men are enlightened. When the unsaved reject the light God graciously bestows on them, their turning away causes blindness and hardening of their hearts.

Luke 16:27. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: 28. For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

John 1:6. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

John 3:19. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

(Note that men are condemned because light is available to them. They choose to love darkness because of their evil deeds. If light was not available, or if they were unable to comprehend light, there would be no condemnation.)

John 9:41. Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

(If unregenerate man was totally blind, he would not be held accountable and none would be lost!)

John 16:8. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9. Of sin, because they believe not on me;

(The Holy Spirit could not legitimately “reprove” a person who was never enlightened and to whom He had never given the ability to believe.)

Acts 17:26. And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27. That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

Acts 17:30. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31. Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness (see following three verses) by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men in that he hath raised him from the dead.

PS 9:8. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

PS 96:13. Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

PS 98:8. Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful 9. together Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity (evenness, to be straight).

(God could not honestly judge the world in “righteousness” and “equity” if all mankind do not have an opportunity to be saved.)

Rom 1:18. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [ even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21. Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

(Note the unsaved man’s heart was darkened when and because he “became” vain AFTER KNOWING GOD.)

Rom 1:25. Who (unsaved man) changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Rom 1:28. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

(Unsaved man made a choice to not RETAIN God in his knowledge, showing they did perceive or retain God at one time. At this decision, on the part of unsaved man, God gave them over to a reprobate mind.)

Rom 1:32. Who (unsaved man) knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Rom 7:23. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

(Paul here described himself as being able to “see” in his unsaved “wretched” condition.)

Rom 10:17. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

Ps 19:1. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. 2. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, 5. Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. 6. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

2Ths 2:10. And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

Heb 10:26. For if we sin wilfully AFTER that we have RECEIVED the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

In the light of the above, the gospel of personal salvation is obviously available to all of mankind.

ALL MEN GIVEN A CHOICE REGARDING PERSONAL SALVATION

It is God’s sovereign will that man be given a choice regarding his personal salvation. It is therefore not able to be altered that man has this choice.

Prov 1:24. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25. But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26. I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27. When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29. For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30. They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. 33. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

Isa 1:16. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17. Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: 20. But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

Isa 45:22. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and [there is] none else.

Isa 66:3. He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine’s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. 4. I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear (not because they could not hear, but because they would not hear…or God would be unjust and not judging in equity, Psalms 89:9): but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

Matt 11:28. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matt 23:37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

(Note the condemnation is because men would not believe, not that they could not believe.)

John 7:37. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried (Evidently the Lord wanted all to hear Him), saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

2Cor 3:15. But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart. 16. Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, (THEN) the veil shall be taken away.

1Pet 2:7. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

(They could not be said to be disobedient if God did not choose them to hear and be saved.)

Rev 3:20. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Rev 22:17. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.

THE REASON(S) MEN ARE LOST

Men refuse God’s gracious offer:

Matt 23:37. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

John 5:40. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Men love darkness because their deeds are evil:

John 3:19. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Men refuse to believe:

John 12:44. Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

John 16:8. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9. Of sin, because they believe not on me;

(Note that not believing in Christ is sin. If Calvinism were true, then God causes mankind to sin because He is the One who fails to cause them to believe.)

Rom 1:28. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Rom 2:4. Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? (If Calvinism were true, the above verse should read, “The sovereign decree of God causes thee to repent,” and the next verse would not be there because they could not have an impenitent heart that treasured up wrath.) 5. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

(How could God be wrathful against people He did not cause to believe through no fault of their own? How could such judgment be called “righteous,”?)

Heb 3:12. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

(How could they “take heed” if they have no control over their hearts? How could they depart from something of which they never had an opportunity to take part?)

Heb 3:18. And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? 19. So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Heb 4:2. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

(Why bother preaching if they cannot hear? How ridiculous one would be to stand before an audience of deaf people and preach the gospel!)

Men harden their own hearts:

Heb 3:8. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

Heb 3:13. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Heb 4:7. Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts

Rom 2:4. Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? 5. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;.

Man refuses to “obey” God:

Heb 5:9. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

(If everyone operates under the sovereign will of God, how could anyone, including the unsaved who have not been caused to believe, possible disobey Him? Therefore it would follow that all would be saved for all obey. Some saved by belief and some by unbelief!)

1Pet 2:7. Unto you therefore which believe [he is] precious: but unto them which be disobedient (it is impossible to be disobedient per the Calvinist doctrine!), the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

GOD HAS TOLD US WHAT IT IS HE PREDESTINATES:

The words “predestinate” and “predestinated” are found in only four verses in the entire Bible. In each case what is predestinated is clearly stated in the context.

Rom 8:29. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

God, who knows all things, knew in advance who would accept and who would reject His Son as Saviour. God’s sovereign will for those who accept is that they be conformed to the image of His Son.” We read in 1Jn 3:2 “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”

Rom 8:30. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

In addition to the grand blessing of the saved being conformed to the image of His Son, God also has predestined other blessings delineated in verse 30 above. The “called” is a calling to one who is already saved with the promise of being conformed to the image of His Son. It is not the calling for salvation. It is the calling to fellowship with Christ (1Cor 1:4-9), Father/son relationship (John 10:1-4), peace (Col 3:5), liberty (Gal 5:13), and holiness (1Thess 4:1-12).

Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

The above verse clearly tells us unto what we have been predestinated, “the adoption of children.” This is the sovereign will of God for those who obey His desired will regarding salvation.

Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

The above predestination is defined in the next verse…Ephesians 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

The “afters” in the next verse should also be noted:

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

THE SEQUENCE OF SALVATION

1. The Lord Jesus Christ died for the sins of all men:

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

I John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.

2. All men are therefore sanctified by His blood:

3. God allows all mankind to accept or reject this sanctification:

a. The Son enlightens all men:

John 1:9 [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

b. The Son draws all men:

John 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me.

c. The Father teaches all men:

John 6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

d. The Holy Spirit convicts all men:

e. God calls all men by the gospel:

II Thessalonians 2:14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

4. Those who willingly receive God’s gracious efforts towards them are saved, born again, and become eternal children of God.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

I Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand.

5. Those who are thus children of God, are given further “callings” from God:

a. Fellowship with Jesus Christ:

I Corinthians 1:9 God [is] faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

b. Peace

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

c. Liberty:

Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only [use] not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

d. Holiness

I Thessalonians 4:7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holi-ness.

e. Father and son relationship:

John 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

6. God’s foreknowledge and ability to “call things which are not as though they were (Romans 4:17)” is thus able to refer to His saved children as His “elect,” “chosen,” or “called.”

I Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.

Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.

NONE CHOSEN TO BELIEVE

Nowhere in all the word of God do we find a single verse which tells us that God has chosen, elected, called, predestinated or ordained anyone to believe. On the contrary, we find numerous admonitions to men to believe, and condemnations if men refuse to believe. Both the admonitions and the condemnations would be absolutely cruel and even ridiculous on the part of God and His ministry if unsaved man had no ability to believe except as God caused him to do so.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

In addition, we are told of God’s grief at the unbelief of man. If the doctrine of extreme predestination were true, it would make such verses absolute hypocrisy on the part of God for He could have simply “chosen” and thus caused these men to believe.

Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, [thou] that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under [her] wings, and ye would not!

Luke 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

Romans 9:2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.

Romans 11:32-36 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable [are] his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, [are] all things: to whom [be] glory for ever. Amen.

Questions that have no answer under the Calvinist doctrine:

1. How could God legitimately be angry with the wicked when it is God who has not caused them to believe?

Psalms 7:11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry [with the wicked] every day.

2. How could Paul legitimately admonish ones to be careful to not have an evil heart of unbelief when according to Calvinism they have no control over their unbelief?

Hebrews 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

3. How could anyone ever be considered a sinner by God if they were totally deaf and blind to their condition?

John 9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

4. How could the great white throne judgment be anything but a cruel mockery of poor souls who never had an opportunity to be saved?

Revelation 20:11-15 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
