From a Message: “FORGIVENESS” by Weyman Zelder

What unforgiveness looks like and can become…

roots of bitterness

Heb. 12:14-15 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Roots spring up and bear fruit. Fruit of bitterness…

We need to be very careful what seeds we sow because the first thing a seed sprouts is a root.

Let us plant not seeds of bitterness

Roots are opportunistic — they do not grow in any particular predictable direction.

Root growth flourishes in soils that supply adequate oxygen, water, nutrients, support and warmth.

The roots of bitterness are fed by bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour and evil speaking. Envy and jealousy Eph. 4:31.

Unforgiveness allows it to continue

Unforgiveness allows the roots to grow. The more time that is allowed to go by without forgiveness the deeper and stronger the roots of bitterness will get and more damage will be done. They get a stronger hold. They will spread out more affecting more and more people…

Gal. 5:15 If you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.

How can we take care? Forgive

Kill the roots of bitterness with forgiveness.

Roots of bitterness can become as the bars to the prison of unforgiveness

One of the greatest ways to feed the roots of bitterness is to keep records of wrongs. The hole in the tree is the vault.

I Cor. 13:5 Love does not keep records of wrongs

What happens to wrongs that are not forgiven? They are stored. They are recorded in your mind. Soon you have a list of wrongs of who said what to whom when and where. What can happen as the list gets longer? The roots of bitterness can be fed.

Love is the solution for the sins of I Corinthians 13.

Forgiveness is the way for them to move forward,

“Laughter, ridicule, opposition and persecution are often the only reward which Christ’s followers get from the world.” ? J.C. Ryle (1816 – 1900)

“If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, … because of this the world hates you…”

Dear ______(your name here)__________ ,

You may not know me yet, but I know you very well. In fact, I know all about you. I saw you while you were still in your mother’s womb (Psa 139:16) and I wonderfully made you (Psa 139:14). I know every word you speak, see every action you take and I know why you do it because I know your thoughts before you do (Psa 139:2-4). I even know the number of hairs on your head (Matt 10:30)! I know every sin you have committed and yet I deeply love you (Rom 5:8). I have also seen you when you wept in secret (Psa 56:8).

After all, I made you in My own image (Gen 1:27). Thus, as my created physical offspring you live and move because of Me (Acts 17:28). Whether you are awake or asleep my thoughts toward you are more than the number of the sand (Psa 139:17-18). Every good thing you have ever received is because and from Me (Jas 1:17).

I have great love and mercy toward you and I want to comfort you in all your pain and sorrow (2Cor 1:3-4). I am near you when you are broken hearted and if you have a contrite spirit I can and will save you (Psa 34:18). Evidence of My love for you is that I did not spare my only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, but allowed Him to die in your place (Rom 8:32) on that awful cross!

I have some really good news for you, in fact, the grandest news! It is not by going to church, submitting to any religious ceremonies or by a list of good works that you may become My blessed child (Tit 3:5). It is by simply believing that Jesus Christ has already paid for all your sins by His death, burial and His resurrection (John 3:16, 1Cor 15:3-4) in your place. I did not send Jesus Christ into the world to condemn you but so that you might be saved and become part of My family!

I promise that if you will simply cry out to Me I will hear you (Psa 40:1 and Rom 10:13) and make you a new creation (2Cor 5:17). I will set your feet on a rock and give you a song in your heart (Psa 40:2-3). If you will trust Me and stop doing things your own way I will direct your life as a loving Father (Pro 3:5-6) and lead you in the paths of righteousness (Psa 23:3). I will take you from your uncertain life into My eternal life (John 3:36). And when it is time for you to come be with Me in heaven, I will arrange a great “Welcome Home” for you into My everlasting kingdom (2Pet 1:11). I am anxiously looking forward to that (Psa 116:15).

My love for and to you is a free gift (Eph 2:8-9), but in order to have it you must be willing to receive it (1Chron 28:9). If you will accept the sacrifice of My Son Jesus Christ as payment for all your sins, I will gladly own you as my forgiven child (1John 3:1-3) and all heaven will rejoice (Luke 15:7). I want to give you a new life (2Cor 5:17) of peace (Rom 5:1). I do not want you to perish (2Pet 3:9). If you are not willing, it will break my heart (Luke 13:34), but I will not force you to become My child.

The very best time to come to Me and be spiritually “born again” (John 3:3) is right NOW (2Cor 6:2)!

Almighty God

(Ps 139:16) Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

(Ps 139:14) I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well

(Ps 139:2-4) You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.

(Mt 10:30) But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

(Ro 5:8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

(Ps 56:8) You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?

(Gen 1:27) So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

(Acts 17:28) for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’

(Ps 139:17-18) How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You

(Jas 1:17) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights…

(2Co 1:3-4) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation…

(Ps 34:18) The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

(Ro 8:32) He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

(Tit 3:5) not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

(Joh 3:16) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

(1Co 15:3-4) For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures

(Psa 40:1) I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.

(Ro 10:13) For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

(2Co 5:17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

(Psa 40:2-3) He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth-Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the LORD.

(Pro 3:5-6) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

(Psa 23:3) He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

(Joh 3:36) He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

(2Pe 1:11) for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

(Ps 116:15) Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints

(Eph 2:8-9) For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works

(2Chron 28:9)…If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.

(1Jo 3:1-3) Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

(Lu 15:7) …there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

(2Co 5:17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

(Rom 5:1) Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

(Lu 13:34) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

(2Pe 3:9) The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

(Joh 3:3) Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

2Co 6:2) For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Diligently seek Him

Diligently seek Him But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. – Heb. 11:6
